The first university-initiated veterans organization for students, faculty, and staff was organized effective May 5.

In fall 2007, the Equal Educational Opportunity-Diversity subcommittee on Multi-cultural events and outreach recommended that Florida Gulf Coast University recognize students, faculty, and staff, as a whole, who have served or who continue to serve in any branch of the United States military.

The great efforts made that year to establish the first-ever Veternas Day Recognition at FGCU were fully appreciated and supported by the executive leadership.

The purpose of Campus Veterans is to support the educational, professional and social development of students, faculty and staff at Florida Gulf Coat University by adherence to the highest standards of accountability, citizenship, commitment, compassion, customer service, excellence, integrity and stewardship.

The mission is to cultivate and to promote the exchange of histories and experiences among United States veterans and the university community, to strengthen the development of human relationships, mutual respect, social responsibility and diversity.

FGCU students, faculty and staff who are veterans, reservists, their widows, spouses, dependents and others are encouraged to contact Linda Cento at (239) 590-7405 or lecnto@fgcu.edu with their name, telephone number and service branch for the traditional Veterans Day recognition banquet held annually in November.

Other veterans activities are also scheduled as close to the Veterans Day holiday as possible.
