Spring to bring traffic changes

The University Police Department has construction plans in the making that will further assist with traffic flow on campus.
In the upcoming months a traffic light will replace the four-way stop in front of the Student Union.
"The light will assist with traffic and pedestrian control and provide a smoother operation of the intersection," Chief Steven Moore said in an e-mail.
Also planned for January are designated right-turn lanes into parking areas. The three-way stop at the main entrance of the school will have a designated right- turn lane. Student who are exiting will not have to stop at the three-way intersection.
An additional left turn lane exiting campus southbound on Ben Hill Griffin Parkway is also included in the construction plans.
According to Chief Moore, design and permit issues have slowed some of the improvements, but they are expected to be completed by the spring semester.
"The goal is to have everything done as soon as possible," Chief Moore said.
Parking Garage 3 opened Nov. 1. The four story structure is general parking.
Faculty, staff and commuter students are permitted to park. Residential students can use the garage between 5 p.m. and 7 a.m., Monday through Friday, during the fall and spring semesters.
UPD expects Garage 3 to become the most highly utilized garage because of its easy access to academic buildings and the Student Union.
Construction was completed two months ahead of schedule. Students may see traffic delays until the rest of the projected improvements are in place.
"UPD will monitor traffic flow during peak times and provide assistance when possible," Chief Moore said.
Peak times include 8 a.m., 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.
Students and faculty are advised to use caution until everyone becomes familiar with the new traffic patterns.
Students who find Garage 3 too congested are recommended to Parking Garage 2, near the arts complex.
