Hello, Florida Gulf Coast University,

I received an email this week from a concerned female student asking what are some ways a students can have healthy eating options while maintaining a variety of options in their diet. Well in the professional opinion of someone who is overweight and exercises infrequently, there is only one correct way to be able to live the hectic college lifestyle and avoid the Freshman 15. One word: planning.

As a college student I have learned during my journey through college that preparation in any aspect of your life is important. Lets face it; the eating options on campus are not affordable or practical. Many students are forced to eat at various locations on campus out of convenience.

I recently learned to bring healthy snacks to campus in case I do get hungry. It's a pretty great idea to bring a packed lunch to campus if you are going to be there all day, but if you are like myself and are traveling back and forth from campus it's better to grab snacks to take to campus.
I recommend almonds or some type of crackers for students because they tend to be filling and provide energy. My friend Laura has now gotten me addicted to bringing different fruits to class such as apples, oranges and grapes.

What's nice about having a snack on campus is that I'm not being forced to buy Aramark's extremely overprice food full of grease and fat. Plus, by bringing food on campus I can go back to my house and cook better meals that are cheaper than the meals on campus. I do realize that some days we may forget or just be a little too lazy to bring our own snack, so my advice for those days would be to take advantage of the very few healthly options that are there in the convenient store beside Subway. Yes, its overpriced, but it's better than getting the runs in class from eating Taco Bell. But don't rely on that everyday because it's so pricy and lacks variety.

Just by going grocery shopping once a week and planning ahead you can save a lot of money and stay in somewhat good health. Healthy choices have many positive effects on our over all well-being.

If you are a student at FGCU who is fed up with the poor and expensive eating options on campus, feel free to let your Student Government know. This is the best way to have an actual change implemented. This is something that Student Government strives to do but they often lack students' opinions on eating options on campus.

The best way to get your voice heard is to email Isaac Roman at sgpres@fgcu.edu. Tell him Mr. Know It All says "Hi Ya!"
